VisitScotland‘s event marketing arm EventScotland, looks to promote Scotland through themed years. If you are looking to visit Scotland then it would be worth exploring which themed years will be a focus of that year.
As Stirling’s leading annual outdoor cultural sporting event, Stirling Highland Games continues to support EventScotland’s themed years where possible.
In 2022 EventScotland’s theme was the Year of Stories.
In 2022, Scotland will be celebrating its Year of Stories which will be a year in which stories inspired by, created, or written in Scotland are showcased and celebrated.
Stirling Highland Games is supporting this themed year by looking back at the history of Stirling Highland Games through story boards which will be onsite for visitors to enjoy.
In 2020 EventScotland’s theme was the Year of Coasts & Waters.
In 2020, Scotland will be celebrating its Year of Coasts & Waters through a year-long programme of exciting events, festivals and activities that everyone can get involved in. From historic harbours and winding waterways to sweeping coastlines, the very best in seafood, whisky, wildlife and wellness – Scotland’s reputation for its rich natural and cultural heritage is one not to be missed.
Due to the pandemic Stirling Highland Games pivoted its event to a virtual event and flew the flag for highland games across Scotland as we produced a 3 hr programme for people to enjoy watching around the world.
In 2018, EventScotland’s theme was the Year of Young people.
Year of Young People 2018 was a global first, providing a platform to showcase the personalities, talents and achievements of Scotland’s young people.
Stirling Highland Games welcomed EventScotland shining a light on activities that have been the pillars of our event since 2014. Each year we look to provide practical learning experiences for up to 30 young people, helping develop core and soft skills needed for employment.
In 2017, EventScotland’s theme was Year of History, heritage and Archaeology.
Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology celebrated important places across Scotland including UNESCO World Heritage Sites, ancient monuments, listed buildings and battlefields. It also captured our cultural traditions, captivating myths, stories and legends.
Visits to Historic Environment Scotland locations hit a record high of 5 million and overseas visitors to Scotland were up 16.9% to 3.2 million.
Stirling Highland Games welcomed this and supported the initiative by creating a new on site Heritage Walking tour which told visitors about the history of the location as well as giving a different perspective about the visible attractions such as Cambuskenneth Abbey, Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument.
In 2016, EventScotland’s theme was the Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design.
Scotland’s Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design 2016 saw the nation celebrate Scotland’s achievements across these three important fields. More than a million people attended events during the Year.
Stirling Highland Games highlighted to visitors the amazing old town of Stirling as part of this themed year.
In 2015, EventScotland’s theme was the Year of Food and Drink.
Scotland celebrated the Year of Food and Drink with a year-long programme of events and activities that shone a spotlight on Scotland’s natural larder. The growing reputation of Scotland’s restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs resulted in a visitor spend of almost £1 billion on food and drink during the year.
Stirling Highland Games supported this themed year by introducing the Food and Drink experience at our event by showcasing 6 of Scotland’s Food and Drink producers.
In 2014, EventScotland’s theme was Year of Homecoming.
The year when ‘Scotland Welcomes the World!’ The year provided a unique platform to shine a global light on Scotland.
A main focus was the Year of Homecoming 2014 consisting of more than 1,000 events, attended by 4.6 million people. This second Year of Homecoming built on the success of the 2009 initiative.
Glasgow played host to the 2014 Commonwealth Games and Scotland also hosted The 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, only the second time that the biggest golf event in the world has taken place in Scotland (first time was at Muirfield in 1973).
Stirling Highland Games supported this theme by showcasing related performances and activities.
